Grading

General

Here we will describe the grading process and also include some grading materials, such as Grading Syllabus, links to videos containing the Katas and list of all requirements candidates neeed to fulfill in order to be graded at Marsden Park Shotokan Karate.

Who can grade

Only current financial club members can grade. If you are not member of Marsden Park Shotokan Karate you are not allowed to come to grading. Also for grading you need to present your current club pass.  Your club patch must also  be sewn on  your uniform. If you have lost your membership book contact Sensei for a new book procedure. You may order the membership uniform patch form this homepage.

How often is grading

There is not a general rule to this. We perform grading when we have a feeling that most of students are ready to grade. This means that all hours necessary for grading are done and the techniques are all learnt and mastered. We have for example 36 hours of training within minimum period of 3 months for white to purple belt. For Brown belts then the training time is doubled, meaning to go from 3rd Kyu to 2nd Kyu you will need to train 72 hours within 6 months.

Grading Syllabus

We follow the Traditional Shotokan style. You may download our grading Syllabus at the end of this page. Ask Sensei for file password
